4 – 6 sep 2020 Immersive Performance during DC Open, Kunst & Denker Contemporary
For the 12th edition of renowned gallery weekend DC OPEN, Kunst & Denker Contemporary invited the Ben J. Riepe Team to conduct a “friendly takeover” of the gallery spaces, aiming to transform them by means of a variety of encounters with Ben J. Riepe’s topics and approaches. This invitation also came about against the background of Ben J. Riepe’s manifesto, demanding a coming together among the arts and a new genre-crossing of arts and sciences under the original title “NEUE WELT (NEW WORLD)”, as published in the 2020 yearbook of trade magazine “tanz”.
For the duration of DC OPEN, gallery Kunst & Denker, displayed a number of photographs by Alexander Basile as exhibits; pictures that were taken within the context of past Ben J. Riepe Kompanie productions. At certain pre-arranged times, visitors* had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the experience of the transformative and space-sensitive performance CREATURE, providing a change of perspective in the white cube within the context of the rehearsals for stage production GESCHÖPFE that premiered in October 2020. In a four-room parkour that started outdoors and subsequently went on through the great exhibition hall, the main offices and the library in the premiere version, two visitors* at a time were led through a shifting and striking event that wove performance and ritual into one overall experience.
CREATURE reacts to particular conditions and potentials, originating anew at each venue, occupying and modifying them.
“Now more than ever, all of us are pondering what communities and new alliances we want and must create in light of this crisis, between the arts and sciences, among researchers*, not least between humans and nature. Thus, the question of how to become a community also serves as the starting point for the exploration in CREATURE, a search we would like to embark on together with the audience. I utilise the term audience responsibility here, a concept that transcends participation in the sense of an accountability that we all embrace for each other, for the community, and the shared project.” Ben J. Riepe
